Beloved and Respected Tamileelam People,
Among all the flags of the world, the Tamileelam National Flag stands with unmatched dignity. It emerged from a revolutionary movement rooted in the pursuit of national liberation, embodying our historic symbol, the tiger, and declaring the resolute message that the Eelam Tamils would rise in righteous struggle like never before. This flag is the sacred emblem of our Tamileelam identity.
To describe the Tamileelam liberation struggle merely as passive resistance or armed resistance is to overlook its true essence. In its purest form, our struggle is a righteous armed struggle. From Thanthai S.J.V. Chelvanayakam’s noble, bloodless resistance to young Prabhakaran’s transformation of that moral resistance into a righteous armed struggle, one that was prepared to shed blood for justice, this became the only language the Sinhala state understood and the only struggle that has kept our nation alive to this day.
Thus, our national flag stands as the enduring symbol of that struggle, understood by the Sinhala state and carried forward as the guiding emblem for generations to come. The rise of the Tamileelam National Flag and the formation of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) are not merely chapters in history; they are living symbols that define our collective journey and identity. The only complete and authentic history our nation holds is the “History of the Tigers.” From the Chola era to Pandara Vanniyan, our past has been celebrated through literature, yet it was never preserved as a history of sovereign nationhood with its own symbols. Our warrior legacy was systematically erased to deny us an identity until the history of the Tigers began.
That history restored dignity to our people as Tamils. Especially among the global Tamil community, the term “Eelam Tamil” gained prominence. Men and women rose as Tigers, and their heroic battles reverberated across the world. The Eelam Tamil identity reached its pinnacle. Our Maaveerars (martyrs) were honoured. The Tamil diaspora, guided by discipline, wisdom, and the warrior spirit, rallied under the Tamileelam National Flag. National Leader Prabhakaran became the embodiment of our nation’s leadership and vision.
For all these reasons, our one true symbol is the Tamileelam National Flag, the sole emblem of who we are. In honour of this sacred symbol of our national pride, our National Leader declared the Tamileelam National Flag Day.
If we drift away from this truth, adopting alternative narratives while mentioning the Tamileelam National Flag only selectively, we not only deceive ourselves but also betray the entire Tamileelam nation. Therefore, it is our highest duty to uphold and proclaim our national flag in its full meaning and historical truth as a tribute to our National Leader, our Maaveerars, and the thousands of innocent Tamil civilians massacred in the genocide of our people.
A proclamation to declare November 21 as Tamileelam National Flag Day will be presented at the Brampton City Council Assembly on November 19, 2025, at 9:30 AM (Eastern Canada Time).
